Warrior Girls Are State Runner-Up

The Waukee High School Girls Basketball team finished an outstanding 2019-2020 season with an impressive postseason run that culminated in a state championship battle with Johnston that came down to the final minute. Johnston defeated Waukee to claim the 5A state championship.

Waukee qualified for the state tournament with a 58-35 regional final victory over Ames. The top-ranked Warriors rolled over Sioux City East in the quarter-final round of the state tournament by a score of 76-36 before defeating fifth-ranked Waterloo West 88-65 in the semi-finals. Waukee hit 15 three-point baskets to break the state tournament record for three-point baskets made in a game. In the championship game, Waukee erased an early 14 point deficit and took a three-point fourth-quarter lead before falling 69-65 to claim the runner-up trophy.

It was the Warriors 13th state tournament appearance in the last 14 years. Waukee won the state championship in 2015.
