State Runner Up Finish for Waukee Boys Basketball
The Waukee Boys Basketball Team ended their most successful season in program history with a state runner up finish. The Warriors lost to Ankeny in the Class 4A Championship Game in front of a limited crowd of just 200 people as a result of COVID-19 precautions.
Waukee qualified for the state tournament by defeating crosstown rival and sixth-ranked West Des Moines Valley 59-55 in a substate final. It was the school’s tenth state tournament appearance and fourth in the last six years. After defeating #5 North Scott in the state quarterfinals, the Warriors defeated top-ranked Ankeny Centennial 68-62 to advance to the state championship game for the first time. Juniors Tucker DeVries and Payton Sandfort were selected to the all-tournament team.
The state runner up finish was the third straight “top 3” finish for boys basketball following third-place finishes in 2018 and 2019. Waukee finished the season with a record of 23-3, the most wins in school history. Waukee also won the CIML Iowa Conference for the third straight year.
Success at the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament capped off an outstanding winter sports season for Waukee as three other winter sports teams brought home state trophies. The Girls’ Basketball Team added a state runner up finish to their impressive state resume’. The Waukee Wrestlers collected a sixth-place trophy at the State Dual Wrestling Tournament and the Boys Swim Team brought home a third-place trophy. Waukee has now placed in the “top eight” at State in 9 of the 12 sports competed so far this school year.
